The son of a noted jazz and music educator, Brian Culbertson was a true prodigy, having started playing piano at age eight, drums at nine, trombone at ten, bass in seventh grade, and euphonium in high school. The multi-instrumentalist made his first record when he was in college at DePaul University in Chicago and has since gone on to a remarkable career as a performer and recording artist.
In a bit of numerical serendipity, Brian released his 20th album, XX, in 2020 and during the last two years brought out a series of three recordings based on input from fans in his Hang Club online: The Trilogy – Part One: Red = Passion; The Trilogy – Part Two: Blue = Melancholy; and Trilogy – Part Three: White = Hope.
From the beginning, Brian has been a regular performer and host on our sailings of The Smooth Jazz Cruise and has always been a crowd favorite who plays keyboards, trombone and piano with a virtuosity that goes right along with his love of jazz, funk, gospel, R&B, soul and just plain groove music. As a presenter himself of special concerts and festivals, Brian well knows what goes into producing an event like The Smooth Jazz Cruise, so we were honored by his endorsement which you can see here.
